Aquarium of Niagara | Niagara Falls
The Aquarium hosts over forty living exhibits that highlight local species and fascinating creatures from across the globe! Humboldt penguins and California sea lions steal the show with daily performances. Special events and private animal encounters are available on a regular basis. There are play-based exhibits for younger kids throughout the aquarium, as well as two interactive touch tank experiences where visitors can really get up close with aquatic life. Kids 2 and under are free. There is a parking fee. The Aquarium offers discounted $3 admission for EBT/SNAP cardholders through the Museums for All Program.
The Buffalo Zoo | Buffalo
The Buffalo Zoological Gardens is the third-oldest institution of its kind in the United States. Home to roughly 1,200 animals, the current programs focus on providing visitors with a better understanding of the natural world, how animals relate to each other, to their environment, and to humankind. They have a train, carousel, and new prehistoric exhibit called Destination Dinosaur. There is a parking fee. Children under 2 are free. $5 Admission is available for EBT/SNAP cardholders.
Hidden Valley Animal Adventure | Varysburg
At Hidden Valley Animal Adventure, you can enjoy a bus safari tour through the park to see unique animals – from alpacas to zebras. You can also get tickets for a self-guided tour and drive the 2.2 mile route in the comfort of your own car. Tickets are also available for a Small Animal Adventure Walk-Thru, where you can visit smaller animals and newborn animals. Hidden Valley Animal Adventure is located in Varysburg, NY, roughly an hour southwest of Rochester.
Rosamond Gifford Zoo | Syracuse
The Rosamond Gifford Zoo is dedicated to connecting people to the natural world by providing engaging guest experiences, exceptional animal care, and unparalleled conservation education. The zoo is home to more than 700 animals representing 216 different species – from tiny poison dart frogs to 8,000-pound Asian elephants – many of them threatened or endangered. Special exhibits, animal encounters, and fun seasonal experiences are always happening here. Children 2 and under are free. This zoo does not participate in the Museums for All Program, but its admission costs are insanely affordable.
Seneca Park Zoo | Irondequoit
It’s easy to spend a whole day here with all the animals you can see, different exhibits and additional experiences available. Food and beverages are available for purchase at multiple locations around the park with indoor and outdoor seating. There is a playground and a duck pond at the park outside of the zoo as well as play structures inside. Kids under 3 are free. $1 Admission available with valid Medicaid/EBT card through the Museums for All Program.
The Wild Animal Park | Chittenango
The Wild Animal Park is a zoo that provides a unique opportunity for visitors to learn about a variety of animals. With a wide range of domestic and exotic animals from all over the world, it’s a great place for adventure, learning, and hours of family fun! Visit the Zoo or drive through the safari experience! They also offer a flashlight safari experience after the sun goes down.
Wildlife
Fish Hatchery at Powder Mills Park | Pittsford
Open year round, the Fish Hatchery provides visitors the opportunity to view a variety of different fish at various stages of development. Fish food is available for purchase there. The park itself has hiking trails, a creek, a playground, public restrooms and picnic tables making it a great day trip.
Wild Wings | Honeoye Falls
Wild Wings Birds of Prey Facility houses permanently injured and non-releasable animals. Over 30 birds including eagles, hawks, vultures, falcons and owls live here along with some mammals and reptiles. The space is outdoors so be sure to dress for the weather. They also manage the Nature Center at Mendon Ponds Park where they house small mammals and maintain a sensory garden. No admission fee.
Reptiles
Prehistoric World Reptile Zoo | Perry
More than a zoo, the prehistoric world offers interactive experiences with reptiles, amphibians, plants and fossils from around the world. Exhibits include frog hollow and bug bayou, the jungle room, and turtle town. Tickets can be purchased on their website for admission and animal feeding experiences. The Prehistoric World Reptile Zoo is located in Perry, NY, roughly one hour southwest of Rochester.
