Whether you’re looking for a quick outing, a full afternoon escape, or just a way to get the kids out of the house without overheating, there are plenty of local options to choose from. Here are some of the best things to do when it’s hot outside in Rochester as well as information about the Rochester Cool Sweep public safety initiative.
Splash Pads
Splash pads are one of the easiest ways to beat the heat with kids because they offer instant relief without the stress of deep water. Kids can run through sprinklers, fountains, and spray jets while parents relax nearby, making them perfect for toddlers through elementary ages. Most are free and located in local parks. For our complete list, see our Guide To Splash Pads In Rochester.
Indoor Playgrounds
When it’s too hot to be outside for long, indoor playgrounds give kids a chance to burn off energy in a climate-controlled space. From climbing structures and slides to bounce areas and obstacle courses, these spots are especially helpful for younger kids who need active play even on the hottest days. Many also offer seating for parents and snacks or coffee nearby, making them a low-stress escape from the heat. See more information in our Guide To Indoor Playgrounds In Rochester.
Museums
Museums are a great way to turn a scorching afternoon into something fun and educational. Hands-on exhibits, interactive science displays, and kid-friendly areas make it easy to keep children engaged while staying cool indoors. Places like children’s museums or science centers are especially good for breaking up long summer days with something that feels like an adventure instead of just an outing. See our Best Museums To Visit With Kids In Rochester.
Libraries
Libraries are one of the most underrated summer heat resources because they’re free, air-conditioned, and full of activities for kids. Beyond books, many branches offer story times, crafts and summer reading programs that help structure the day without spending money. They’re also an easy “reset button” when everyone needs a calm, quiet break from the heat. Check out these 10 Must-Visit Library Branches For Kids In Monroe County.
Bowling
Bowling is a classic indoor activity that works well for families because it’s low-pressure, fun for all ages, and fully climate-controlled. Many bowling alleys offer bumper lanes and lightweight balls for younger kids, so even beginners can participate and have fun. It’s also a great option for an early evening outing when you still want to get out of the house but avoid the daytime heat. For ideas on where to go, check out Best Bowling Alleys In Rochester.
Discounted Summer Movies
Discounted summer movie programs are a go-to option for hot days when you just need something simple and air-conditioned. Many theaters offer special matinees or kid-friendly films at reduced prices during the summer, making it an affordable way to escape the heat for a couple of hours. It’s especially helpful for midday breaks when outdoor play isn’t safe or comfortable. See what’s playing this month!
Ice Cream
It’s not summer without enjoying some local ice cream. Head to your favorite shop or discover a new one in our Guide To Ice Cream Shops In Rochester.
