1. Playgrounds
Rochester is full of great playgrounds that are perfect for toddlers to explore and burn off energy. Fenced-in playgrounds with rubber surfaces are especially toddler-friendly, offering both fun and peace of mind. Some local favorites include Kids Canyon in Greece, Karpus Family Playground in Webster, and the playground at Irondequoit Bay State Marine Park, tucked behind Seabreeze. For even more options, check out our full Guide to Playgrounds.
2. Splash Pads
Cool off on a hot day at one of Rochester’s many free splash pads! Many are located near playgrounds, so you can easily make a morning of it with snacks, towels, and sunscreen in tow. Check out the new Henrietta Splash Bash and new Pineway Ponds Splash Pad in Ogden (opens June 19). For a complete list of Splash Pads, see our Guide To Splash Pads.
3. Indoor Playgrounds
For those extra hot or rainy days, indoor playgrounds can be a lifesaver. Many are designed specifically with toddlers in mind, offering safe, age-appropriate play zones. Local favorites like Ladybugs Play, Roc Kid City, and The Playpen feature designated areas for younger children, making them great choices for little ones on the move. Most indoor playgrounds have a small admission fee and offer membership options. Explore more in our Guide to Indoor Playgrounds.
4. Go Berry Picking
Berry picking is a sweet summer tradition that toddlers can enjoy, too. With strawberries in June and blueberries and raspberries later in the summer, local farms like Gro-Moore Farms in Rush and Chase Farms in Fairport offer low-to-the-ground bushes that make it easy for little hands to help. Don’t forget a sunhat and snacks! To learn more about berry-picking season and the farms around Rochester, see our Guide To Berry Picking.
5. Visit Farm Animals
Some other farms are great places for toddlers to meet gentle farm animals up close — and Rochester has plenty of opportunities! Springdale Farm in Spencerport and Powers Farm in Pittsford are great spots to see goats, chickens, and bunnies. Many area farms offer open petting areas or guided interactions that are perfect for young kids just learning about animals. For more ideas, check out our article on Where To See Farm Animals.
6. Visit a Museum
Rochester is home to several toddler-friendly museums where little ones can play while they learn. The Strong National Museum of Play is a must-visit, with interactive exhibits, toddler play zones, and hands-on activities that will keep them entertained for hours. Smaller children also love Rochester Museum & Science Center’s simple science experiments that spark curiosity early. See Best Museums To Visit With Kids.
7. Take a Ride on the Train
Another great museum to visit is the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum in Rush, for a short, scenic train ride that feels like a big adventure to a little one. Many weekend events are toddler-friendly, and the staff is great at welcoming young families. It’s a unique outing that’s especially fun for vehicle-obsessed toddlers! Get your tickets online or at the museum.
8. Lamberton Conservatory
Lamberton Conservatory in Highland Park is a quiet oasis full of tropical plants, koi ponds, and even turtles. It’s stroller-friendly and air-conditioned — a perfect outing on a hot or rainy day. Little ones love spotting the colorful plants and animals, and it’s small enough not to overwhelm them. Admission is $3.
9. Explore Ontario Beach Park
With a large playground, boardwalk, and sandy beach, Ontario Beach Park offers everything you need for a full toddler adventure. Go early to beat the crowds, bring a bucket and shovel, and enjoy a walk along the pier or a ride on the historic carousel on weekends. It’s a perfect mix of active and calm fun. See more at Exploring Ontario Beach Park.
10. Enjoy a Story Time at the Library
Many branches of The Monroe County Library System host free, age-specific story times throughout the week. These story sessions often include music, movement, and crafts—perfect for toddlers who are building language and social skills. They’re also a great way to meet other moms and caregivers in your area. Check out what is near you in our Guide To Library Storytimes.
