Seabreeze Amusement Park

Location: Rochester (Irondequoit, NY)

Admission: Range of $30 – 50 (Save money if you order tickets online)

Ages: Best for ages 3 -14

Things to Know: This is an all-around great first amusement park experience for family fun. It offers classic children’s rides along with some great thrill-seeking coasters. It’s also perfect for hot days, as there is a full water park within the park. Attractions include wooden roller coasters, a kiddie ride area, a wave pool, and a lazy river.

This park allows outside food, so packing a lunch can help you save money. The water park closes earlier than the rides, so it’s best to visit the water attractions first. You must wear proper clothing on rides, so be sure to bring a change of clothes.

Six Flags Darien Lake

Location: Corfu, NY | 1 hour west of Rochester

Admission: Range of $40 – $80 (Parking is not included. Save money by ordering tickets online)

Ages: Best for ages 8 and up (Kids 3 and under are free)

Things to Know: This is a large amusement park with a variety of thrill-seeking coasters, a full water park (included with admission), and traditional family-friendly rides. The park also offers entertainment such as concerts and a lakefront laser light show.

The park is fully cashless, so you must have a credit or debit card for purchases. Outside food and drinks are not allowed, so plan to buy meals inside the park. Since it’s a bit of a drive from Rochester, it can easily turn into a weekend getaway. The park offers accommodations, including campgrounds and hotel-style lodging.

Location: Olcott, NY | 1.5 hours West of Rochester

Admission: Admission is free, but you need to buy tickets per ride for $0.25.

Ages: Best for Toddlers to 10

Things to Know: Most rides have height restrictions, with a maximum height of 52 inches. However, both adults and children can ride the vintage carousel. Older children may enjoy the vintage arcade games located in the East Pavilion.

The park features a daily live magic show at 2 PM and hosts community events like Christmas in July and movie nights. Nearby, Krull Park offers a public splash pad, large playground, and beach access. The area is also known for its clean public restrooms and a designated nursing area for mothers.

The park has its own concession stand, but picnic-style outside food is allowed.

Sylvan Beach Amusement Park

Location: Sylvan Beach, NY | 2 hours East of Rochester

Admission: Admission is free, but you need to buy tickets per ride. Range of $20 or $35, depending on when you go and the number of rides.

Ages: Best for ages 2-14 (Teens may not find this park as thrilling)

Things to Know: The park is located just steps from the lakefront beach, making it easy to switch between rides and water play. It features many nostalgic, vintage attractions and arcade games. Since there’s no entrance fee, there’s less pressure to stay all day.

Hours are limited, as the park is typically open Thursday through Sunday during peak summer. Because many attractions are older, the park may not feel as polished as larger parks. Outside food is allowed on the beach and in the picnic area across from the park.

Midway State Park

Location: Bemus Point, NY, | 2.5 hours Southwest of Rochester

Admission: The park is “Pay-Per-Ride”. It is free to walk in the park, but the range is $16-$20 for unlimited rides and $1.50 per ride.

Ages: Best for ages 2 to 12

Things to Know: Midway State Park is another nostalgic amusement park with a relaxed pace. Since admission is free, you can visit for a full day or just a short outing. The park is picnic-friendly and located on Chautauqua Lake, offering beautiful waterfront views.

There is also an on-site museum showcasing the park’s history. Unlike other parks, Midway does not offer water attractions. One highlight is the 1946 Allan Herschell Carousel. Be sure to check their website for special events like fireworks, car shows, and live entertainment.

The Great Escape (Six Flags)

Location: Queensbury, NY | 3.5 hours East of Rochester

Admission: Buy tickets online for a range of $30 – $50 (Kids under 3 are free)

Ages: 2 to Teen (Fun for all ages)

Things to Know: This park offers a great mix of attractions, from a fairytale-themed area with gentle rides for toddlers to thrilling rides for older kids and teens. A water park is included with admission and features attractions for all ages.

There is also an indoor water park nearby called Great Escape Lodge, which is a great option if the weather isn’t ideal. Like Darien Lake, outside food is not allowed, so plan accordingly. The park is strict about height requirements, so it’s a good idea to measure your child ahead of time. Accommodations are available if you plan to make it a multi-day trip.
