Living in Rochester means having easy access to some of New York’s most beautiful destinations, especially the Finger Lakes region. Just a 35-minute drive from downtown Rochester, Canandaigua Lake and the charming town of Canandaigua make the perfect day trip for families. Here are a few fun ways for you and your kids to explore everything Canandaigua has to offer.

Tips

  • My personal favorite tip–grab a coffee to go from a local cafe before hitting the road.
  • Pack a picnic blanket, towels, sunscreen, sunglasses and hats.
  • Don’t forget the bug spray!
  • If you’re traveling in the afternoon, be aware of CMAC concert traffic in the area.
  • Plan to pay for tolls or use your EZPass on the thruway.
  • Check the weather if you’re planning outdoor activities.

Day Trip to Canandaigua Itinerary

Start with a Hike

Park with Hiking: Ontario Pathways Trail

Start your morning by stretching your legs after the drive and stepping into the world of the Hundred Acre Wood. The Ontario Pathways Trail in Canandaigua features a charming “Winnie the Pooh” trail, where hand-carved and hand-painted characters, along with favorite quotes from the beloved stories, are scattered along the path.

  • Parking: This stretch of trail is between the Ontario County Fairgrounds and County Road 46 (on County Road 10). Look out for designated Ontario Pathways parking.

Cool Off With a Swim

Park with Lake Swimming: Kershaw Park

Take a stroll through this beautiful lakeside park or head straight to the sandy beach, where certified lifeguards are on duty during the summer. The park also features a playground, restrooms, picnic tables, and plenty of grassy space to relax or enjoy lunch. Located on the north end of Canandaigua Lake and just minutes from downtown, it’s an easy stop with stunning lake views and convenient beach access.

Note: The beach is open 7 days per week from 11 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. (weather dependent).

  • Parking
    • Lakeshore Drive Street Parking: Free parallel street parking is permitted in designated spots along both sides of Lakeshore Drive running parallel to the park walkways
    • Parking lot located directly off Lakeshore Drive near the main bathhouse and swimming area. It offers quick access to the playground and beach.
    • Lakefront Park & City Pier: You can find additional vehicle spaces just a short walk away near Lakefront Park and the adjacent City Pier.

Alternative Park: Onanda Park is a short drive down the West side of the lake and offers nature-immersive scenery, including nearby hiking trails in addition to a swimming area, playground, and picnic tables.

Not up for a swim or hike? Take a scenic lunch tour on the Canandaigua Lady.

Break For Lunch

Pack a lunch and enjoy a picnic at Kershaw Park, or head into town and grab a bite at one of the many local restaurants. With plenty of family-friendly options to choose from, there’s something for everyone. A few places located right next to Kershaw Park include Twisted Rail, Other Half Brewing, and Fire on the Lake.

End With More Play

Park with a Playground: Motion Junction Inclusive Playground

Motion Junction Playground

There are plenty of great playgrounds in the area, but this one is well worth a visit. Located on the north side of Canandaigua, it features a wide variety of play equipment and is thoughtfully designed to be fully accessible and inclusive for children of all abilities. Let the kids burn off their last bit of energy, then grab a snack from the concession stand before heading home.

This is just a glimpse of everything Canandaigua has to offer. Located only 35 minutes from Rochester, it’s an easy day trip—and a place you’ll want to visit again and again to discover even more.

Maggie returned home to Rochester in 2022 after spending 12 years in Colorado. With two littles in tow, she’s traded rock climbing and hiking the Rocky Mountains for kid-friendly trails, stroller-ready walkways, and playground adventures around Rochester and Western New York. In addition to being a nature lover, Maggie has also rediscovered her creative side, spending time painting, working with clay, and doodling alongside her five-year-old daughter. After taking a career break to be a full-time mom, she’s excited to begin writing again and looks forward to connecting more deeply with the local community.
