September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month. You probably know that a Monroe County Library System (MCLS) card gives you access to thousands of books, music recordings, and movies. But did you know that your library card can get you free admission into area attractions, or save you time researching a big purchase? Read on to learn four library card hacks for parents. Then, head down to your nearest library to sign up for a card if you don’t already have one.

1. Visit a NY State Park for Free.

The NYS Empire Pass program grants passholders free parking at all New York State parks. The pass typically costs $80 for one season – but you can use one for free with your library card. Several MCLS locations have Empire Passes available to borrow. Simply check out a pass, bring it with you to a state park for free admission, and return the pass after. Access the list of participating libraries.

2. Get Discounted Tickets to Area Attractions.

Similar to the Empire Pass, MCLS offers a Very Important Places (VIP) Pass. This pass gives families free or reduced-price admission to popular attractions around Rochester. Examples of what’s included in the 2023-2024 VIP Pass include: BOGO admission to George Eastman Museum, BOGO admission to the Rochester Museum & Science Center, discounted admission to Sonnenberg Gardens, and discounted tickets to the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. Borrow a VIP Pass at a participating MCLS locations. Then, bring it with you to the venue, and present it for discounted admission. See participating libraries and area attractions to start planning your next family outing.

3. Save Time and Money on Big Purchases by Accessing Consumer Reports.

Consumer Reports (CR) is a nonprofit that publishes independent testing, ratings, and buying guides for thousands of products. It is a fantastic resource for parents who are navigating both big and small purchases. CR has buying guides for items including cribs, strollers, humidifiers, family-friendly cars, high chairs, bike helmets, air purifiers, and more. With an MCLS library card, you can access all of Consumer Reports’ research for free. It can help you choose high-quality, cost-effective options, and save you serious research time in the process.

4. Beat Boredom at The Toy Library.

The Toy Library at Lincoln Branch recently re-opened after renovations. Here, you will find hundreds of toys that can be checked out. If you’re looking for a way to keep your kids’ toy rotation fresh, or for a rainy day activity, consider visiting.
