The early months with a new baby can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re learning what actually makes daily life easier. While every family is different, there are certain items that consistently help simplify routines, reduce stress, and make caring for a newborn more manageable. If I had to do it all again, here are the items I would have from the beginning.

See all of these items in our Amazon Storefront List.

Essential for Sleep

SwaddleMe Wraps
Swaddling can be tricky, especially in the middle of the night. Velcro swaddle wraps make it quick and easy to get baby snug and secure without the frustration of folding blankets while your baby is crying.

Baby Monitor (with Sound or Music)
A baby monitor adds peace of mind by letting you hear your baby from anywhere in the house. Our monitor plays a soothing lullaby and shines stars on the ceiling and created a consistent sleep routine. I still turn it on at night when our five-year old can’t settle down.

Sound Machine
White noise helps create a consistent sleep environment and can make it easier for babies to settle, especially in shared or noisy homes.

Blackout Curtains
Darkening a room can make naps and early bedtimes easier, especially during brighter months when natural light can disrupt sleep.

Multiple Waterproof Mattress Protectors
Accidents happen often, and laundry isn’t always immediate. Having more than one mattress protector makes it easy to swap and keep things clean without disrupting sleep.

On-The-Go Gear

Baby Bouncers
Having a safe place to set your baby down in different areas of your home makes daily life much easier. A lightweight bouncer can be moved from room to room so you always have a secure spot nearby.

Baby Carrier
A baby carrier keeps your hands free while keeping baby close. I tried a hefty carrier but it was too bulky. I tried a wrap but it was too difficult to tie well in a pinch. I loved the Infantino Convertible Baby Carrier because it is so lightweight, easy to snap baby in and baby can go towards you or out.

Car Seat Frame Stroller
For quick errands, a car seat frame stroller is often easier than a full-size stroller. It allows you to click the infant car seat directly into place, making transitions in and out of the car faster and less bulky. These are easy to pick up second-hand.

Diapering Must-Haves

Diaper Caddy
Keeping diapers, wipes, and essentials organized in a portable caddies or baskets in different areas of the house makes it easier to handle changes.

Diaper Genie (or Sealed Diaper Pail)
I didn’t know what a big deal a diaper genie is until I had two kids in diapers. It’s a sealed diaper pail that uses a continuous liner system. When it fills up, you simply open the side and pull out the full section, tear it off, and tie a new knot to create the next bag.

Changing Pad Liners
Diaper changing pad covers need frequent washing. Waterproof liners placed on top make cleanup faster – just swap it out instead of changing the entire cover.

Feeding Must-Haves

Nipple Shields
A soft silicone shield used during breastfeeding to help with latch issues or sensitivity. Many moms find them especially helpful in the early weeks while both mom and baby are learning. Make sure you get the right size for you.

Nursing Pillow
Provides support during feeding and helps reduce strain on your arms, shoulders, and back, especially during long or frequent feeds. I tried the My Breast Friend pillow but it was very cumbersome to set up and strap it around you. A Boppy pillow was more helpful for me.

Hands-Free Breast Pump
A wearable pump allows for more mobility while pumping, making it easier to manage daily tasks instead of being tied to one spot. I was tied to my pump five times a day for two babies. For my third baby, I worked hard to find one of the new hands-free breast pumps and it was life-changing. Today, there are many different models readily available to moms.

Bottle Warmer
When a baby is hungry, waiting for a bottle to warm can feel stressful. A bottle warmer speeds up the process.

Formula Dispensers
Prepared formula in containers makes feeding on the go much easier. Just combine with bottles pre-filled with water when needed – no measuring required in the moment.

Sterilizer Bags
Cleaning bottles and breast pump parts regularly is a lot of work. Sterilizer bags simplify cleaning by allowing you to quickly steam-sanitize parts in the microwave.

Final Thoughts

When it comes to baby must-haves for new moms, the goal isn’t to have everything – it’s to have the right items that make daily routines easier. From sleep support to feeding essentials, these newborn items can help simplify those early months and make life with a new baby feel a little more manageable.
