I Know What You Did This Summer

Hey Mama,

I know what you did THIS summer.

I know you drove to and from different camps with your extra large coffee mug. I know you packed or made lunches every day, searched for missing flip flops, and wrestled sunscreen onto squirming kids.

I know you refilled the freezer numerous times with popsicles and juice boxes. You said yes to last-minute playdates, rearranged your work schedule for day trips, and pulled off “fun” in a way your kids won’t truly appreciate until they’re parents themselves.

I know there were days that didn’t feel magical at all. Days you felt more like a cruise ship director than a present, and engaged Mom. Days you scrolled your phone while the kids splashed in the pool and felt guilty for not “soaking it in” enough. Days you wondered if you’d done enough to make THIS summer special.

I have to remind you.  You have.

You gave them experiences they’ll carry forever. Seriously! You did. Not just the big things, like vacations, zoo trips, and fireworks, but the small things too. The quiet mornings when you let them sleep in. The lazy afternoons watching a movie together because everyone needed a break. The evenings you sat outside while they rode bikes up and down the street, calling “just one more time!”  Those days where they had extra tablet time to create the newest world, or simply bond with friends.

You made sure they were fed, safe, and loved, even when you were running on fumes. You planned, organized, and rearranged life so they could have adventures, learn new skills, and just be kids! That takes time, energy, and a whole lot of love.

You may be looking back feeling like you missed moments, but think about all the things you didn’t miss.  Think about what memories your kids made, because of your hard work and love.  Honestly, ask them what few things they have enjoyed this summer! Because they will remember the joy. They will remember the popsicles dripping down their arms, the smell of sunscreen, the freedom of running barefoot in the grass and randomly creating baseball games with kids in the neighborhood.

They remember YOU there with them.

So, as summer winds down, take a deep breath in and give yourself the credit you deserve. You have been their anchor and their adventure guide. You have given them a summer filled with love in both big and small ways.

I know you are tired and I know there are things you wish you had done differently, but what if perfection isn’t the goal?  What if love, effort and presence takes the cake?  How can you remember this summer, and every summer, with an appreciation for time with your kids?

Cheers to you, Mama. The tired, resourceful, big-hearted soul who somehow made it all happen. You gave your kids an amazing summer. And that is something to be proud of!

Before you know it, the school year shuffle will start and new adventures, responsibilities and transitions will begin.  So for now, soak in the sun, give yourself a big cup of grace and pause to appreciate all you’ve done and who you are!

With love,
