The start of the school year requires a lot of planning and mental juggling for moms. Rochester Mom Collective is here to help with our handy Back-To-School Checklist with the different ways we as moms help prepare our kids for school.

School Supplies

  •  Purchase school supply list items
  •  Label all supplies, clothing, and lunch containers
  •  Get a durable backpack, lunchbox, water bottle etc.

Clothing & Gear

  •  Sort and donate outgrown clothes
  •  Shop for new school clothes & shoes
  •  Buy gym clothes or uniforms (if needed)
  •  Pack an extra set of clothes (especially for younger kids)
  •  Label jackets, hoodies, and gear

Food Prep

  •  Stock the pantry with lunch snacks
  •  Make a list of lunch ideas for meal planning
  •  Wash and portion fruit/veggies for the week
  •  Prepare or freeze lunchbox-friendly meals

School & Schedule Readiness

  •  Confirm teacher assignment and room number
  •  Know the bus schedule or carpool plan
  •  Print or save school calendar
  •  Visit school if your child is new or anxious
  •  Practice early bed/wake-up routine a week before school starts
  •  Review daily schedule with your child

Parent Planning

  •  Update your family calendar with school dates/events
  •  Fill out all required forms (health, emergency contact, permissions)
  •  Schedule any doctor/dental appointments
  •  Confirm after-school care or activity registrations
  •  Set up your school communication apps or email alerts

Emotional Prep

  •  Talk with your child about what to expect
  •  Create a special first day ritual (note, photo, breakfast)
  •  Address any worries or questions they may have
  •  Write encouraging notes or lunchbox messages
  •  Take the traditional first day of school photo!

Extras for You

  • Celebrate getting through the first week
  • Rebuild your daily routine (coffee, quiet time, work time)
  • Set goals or intentions for the school year
  • Schedule time for yourself once school begins
  • Coordinate with other moms for meetups or coffee after drop-off

Jackie is the Founder of Rochester Mom Collective. She grew up in Ohio and moved to California to work in film where she had lots of adventures on movie sets. She met her husband in Hollywood and they moved to the San Francisco Bay Area shortly after getting married. In San Francisco, Jackie found work at a medical clinic where she gathered parenting resources for new moms in need. After being on the West Coast for fifteen years, they moved with their three children to the Rochester area to be near family. Jackie has operated her own photography business, Jackie Rutan Photography, for ten years. Jackie enjoys her quality time with friends and family, fellowshipping at her church and drinking iced coffee.
