The Harley School is a college preparatory, independent day school located in Brighton that started in 1917. Today, over 500 students are enrolled from age 3 through 12th grade and the school continues to offer excellence in education and prepare students to lead lives of great purpose.

Lower School: Nursery To 4th Grade

The Lower School starts with Nursery 3 for three year-olds with 3 and 5-day options. The program nurtures students’ curiosity and confidence with music and play with access to the school’s amenities which include an organic microfarm, swimming pool and natural playground. Nursery 4 is the Pre-K program for four-year olds, designed to set them on a path to enjoy learning with math, art, Spanish and physical education.

In Lower School, Kindergarten combines with First Grade to help students develop at their own pace. The Lower School follows a thematic curriculum that allows lessons to cross-over from social studies to science to mathematics and more. Faculty specializing in the arts, world languages, physical education, sustainability education, and technology also work with students to connect and extend the academic program. Special projects include learning to write and send letters around the school in their own postal service and studying the crayfish who live in Allen’s Creek along the south side of the campus.

Middle School: 5th-8th Grade

In Middle School, students remain with the same teachers for both 5th/6th and 7th/8th grades. They have a unique period called Flex Time where they choose an elective for extra study such as podcasting, digital drawing or running club. The Harley School believes that extracurricular activities are an extension of the classroom, and all students are required to able to participate in modified team sports starting in 7th grade. The HAC Athletics Program allows students to compete in baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, golf, track and field, tennis and swimming.

Upper School: 9th-12th Grade

With a small class size, Upper School students regularly participate in debates, workshops and round-table discussions. The Harley School offers twenty AP classes, including Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, Physics, Statistics, and Computer Science. Students can enroll in any of the unique 50 electives like food & farm, kiln glass, coding, psychology and 3D printing. Personalized college counseling helps students research and choose a college that meets their needs.

Campus Amenities

The 25-acre campus offers amenities that you don’t find at most schools. Students can take classes for dance and yoga in the studio. The large fieldhouse has four basketball courts, an indoor track and tennis facilities. Students can utilize the fitness center and all students learn to swim in the indoor 6-lane pool. In addition to the microfarm, students also learn about sustainability in the “living building” – a 15,000 sq. ft. building that generates its own energy, heats and cools with renewable nontoxic resources, and captures and utilizes water and carbon in its greenhouse.

An on-campus Open House is a great way to learn about The Harley School. Please join us to hear about Harley’s unique philosophy and enriching education. Our three division heads along with current parents and our enrollment team will be here to welcome you. Your visit will include a short presentation as well as a tour of our beautiful campus where you will be able to meet some of our talented faculty and ask questions about our program. Jackie is the Founder of Rochester Mom Collective. She grew up in Ohio and moved to California to work in film where she had lots of adventures on movie sets. She met her husband in Hollywood and they moved to the San Francisco Bay Area shortly after getting married. In San Francisco, Jackie found work at a medical clinic where she gathered parenting resources for new moms in need. After being on the West Coast for fifteen years, they moved with their three children to the Rochester area to be near family. Jackie has operated her own photography business, Jackie Rutan Photography, for ten years. Jackie enjoys her quality time with friends and family, fellowshipping at her church and drinking iced coffee.
