Valentine’s Day seems to be one of those holidays that people either love or find a major inconvenience. Admittedly, I am not the biggest fan of Valentine’s Day. However, I have two children, and I feel a bit of obligation to make it a special time for them.
I don’t want to overload them with sugar or give them ideas of romance, instead I focus on the love I have for them, and take the time to make sure I put it into words. As moms we hope to do that every day, but the reality is that these affirmations often get lost in the busy-ness of daily life. So I view February as a great month to set aside a bit of time to express to my children how I feel with something simple, special, and Valentine-y.
Prior to February 1st, I cut out 14 hearts for each person in my house, including my husband. (You could start this on any day, I just prefer to do it for the two weeks ahead of Valentine’s Day.) On each heart I write a phrase of affirmation or appreciation for that family member. After they go to bed, I tape a new heart to the outside of their bedroom door. Every morning in February my family members wake up to a new reason why they are loved. It makes the month special and focused on sharing our love and appreciation for our family.
