Valentine’s Day sure has changed since I was a kid. Growing up, Valentine’s Day was for cards and heart boxes of candy. Today, the holiday now has matching family pajamas. I try not to buy into the hype of what stores want me to buy as a mom at every holiday, but I lean in a little for Valentine’s Day because for now, I get to be my children’s Valentine. It gives me an opportunity to love on them and have some fun with this holiday that gets awkward to navigate as you get older. One way I celebrate Valentine’s Day with my kids is having a Valentine’s Day Basket ready for them in the morning.
I like buying gifts for my kids and seeing them get excited and happy at something new. A basket of goodies doesn’t have to be a big, expensive deal. I have red plastic baskets that I tuck away for each year and I get a few small items, usually at the dollar store and candy for them to enjoy. I also like to get them a card or make them a homemade valentine. (I also usually get candy, a small gift and card for my husband that I put in a basket for him.) I figure I’m going to get the some Valentine’s Day candy and a card. Putting it in a basket with a few small toys or items I was already picking up for them, just adds a lot to the day for them.
Tips For Valentine’s Day Baskets
When you consider what you want for a basket or container, just remember that getting a small basket means you don’t have to fill it with much but it won’t fit bigger items. Getting a large basket will fit larger items but you’ll need to add more to fill it. When it comes to treats, you can add candy, fruit snacks, cookies or anything that they like. Ideas For Valentine’s Day Baskets
There are always useful items that I mean to pick up for my kids and being able to throw them in their basket is a great excuse to pick some of them up. Valentine’s Day is my time to stock them up on bandaids (the ones with the tv characters), chapstick and ponytail holders. Getting some new art supplies and a journal or coloring book is something my kids get excited about. (I might use this as a time to spring for the glitter crayons or fun smelling markers.) I also like to add a small toy like a small lego box or puzzle.
